But when there all going for it with doors closed on the room and the main entrance door closed, standing at the back door of my house I cannot hear the band playing at all, :yahoo:

not very technical I know but I am very happy with the build so far.

Haven't posted for a while as have been busy doing some work in the garden, brick walls and some slabs, also some stonework around my koi pond I'm hoping to be finished in the next 2 weeks so be able to get on with the studio build phase 2, the live room

I have been really pleased with the control room which is small admittedly but my son has been using it for band practice at least twice a week and no problems from noise levels causing complaints from neighbours, however I am seriously contemplating going for a 3.00m ceiling height and maybe slightly beefing up some more on the stud work for the live room, has anyone any idea the effect replacing 15mm plasterboard with 19mm thick plasterboard will have?

Also will an extra 25mm air gap make a huge difference as this room is a little bigger I could afford to go for 125mm air gap instead of 100mm?

If you can give me the full details of what you are planning, then I can figure it out for you, theoretically. In terms of how many layers you are thinking of for each side of the wall, what type of plasterboard (fire rated, or not), amount of insulation in the cavity, etc.

But yes, in general increasing from 100 to 125mm gap would have a good positive effect: that's a 25% increase in air gap. Also going from 15mm to 19mm will have a good positive effect: that's a bit more than 25% increase in mass. The combination of both would be extra positive! If you can afford the space, then go for it.

Hi Stuart thanks for replying,

I have a chance possibly of obtaining some 90mm metal studs and some 19mm plasterboard from a construction site I am working on, as the tackers are nearly finished and there ganger has said what ever is over I can have for a 'drink', well the pallet of 19mm plasterboard is completely un-touched so there would be enough to do 2 skins together if I can get it all though I was planning to use a layer of 18mm ply first for stregnth, I'v also never used this metal stud do I still use conventional timbers for the ceiling joists as I already have 150mm x 100mm timbers for this.

The live room is not big but the space I have is what is available so the build would be the same as for the control room, outside walls are 100mm concrete blocks inside face to be rendered to seal the blocks, roof is slate on 12mm OSB all joints sealed with 100mm rockwool insulation.
The dividing wall between the control room and the live room is already built as this is 150mm concrete blocks and stone which you can see in the previous pictures, coming off this will be 3 stud walls with an entrance door, previously on the control room i had built the stud work 30mm of the outside walls using 68mm x 48mm timbers because space was so tight and then filled with glass fibre/ rock wool with 18mm ply and then 15mm plasterboard then plaster finish.

If the increase of the air space was to 130mm and 2 layers of 19mm plasterboard instead of the control room spec what would be the approximate increase in isolation?

If there are not enough sheets of 19mm plasterboard for 2 layers I will go for 1 layer of 18mm plywood and 1 layer of 19mm plasterboard.

Hi Stuart,

could you give me an idea of the increase in isolation between my control room spec of 100mm concrete block rendered outside wall then 100mm air space filled with fibre glass, 18mm plywood, 15mm plasterboard, plaster skim finish,

live room possible spec of 100mm concrete block rendered outside wall then 130mm air space filled with fibre glass, 2 skins of 19mm plasterboard and plaster skim finish

Hi Stuart,

wonder if you could reply to my post with a slight alteration in the spec of the live room build is 100mm concrete block with sand cement render to inside and outside, 130mm air space with 1 layer of 15mm OSB board and 2 layers of 19mm plasterboard, finished with a plaster skim finish?

My extra concrete foundation I added to my end shed wall foundation after I had decided to go down in the ground for the studio last year, gonna need to dry pack that void to be safe before doing the build against it

foundation in and have started to block up to DPC with the stone left from my pond filter build, 1200 gauge polythene then laid against the wall on the outside and 75mm fibre reinforced waterproof concrete to the outside below ground. :D

Its looking you have small space in your garden as you have explained in you pictures. If your interior contents is suitable for this space then it will be fine. I think it will be a good atmosphere for your son to practice. Good Luck
