I ran a quick sound level test yesterday using my analogue db meter, here's what I got:

studio running @ 90db
directly behind closed studio door = 65db
directly behind kitchen door = 50db
room above studio = 55db
outside = music was barely audible against ambient noise

Given that my main goal when starting this build was isolation (and allowing for my limitations on wall thickness) I'm extremely happy with the results. I'm sure the acoustics will need some refining, but for now I'm amazed at the clarity of bass frequencies and stereo imaging. For me it's now about getting back to the music and earning a living, I've temp rigged my gear so I can start work again but there's a new workstation in the pipeline (via my studio buddy Carlo) to make better use of the extra space I have.

It feels like an appropriate time to say a huge thanks to John and all the experts for this fantastic resource, there's no way I would have achieved this without their help! :D

All the best,
Patrick

Just had to drop in and say thank you for posting such an informative thread!

My space is pretty much identical to yours (aside from a couple of side windows and the door in a different place) so I was thrilled to see someone else doing pretty much exactly what I plan to do walls-wise (alas my floor will need more work than yours did).

Did you use any green glue or similar between the main plasterboard and the "beefing" panels?

Cheers!

Hi Olly, many thanks for your comments.

No green glue between the panels on the walls due to my being a tight Yorkshire bloke, although I did use it between the beef up panels on the door.

Good luck with the build! :)

Pat

I have read through your entire thread and am very impressed at the attention payed to such details with one exception... It would appear that little attention was payed to door seals. A large portion of sound that escapes or enters a room is done so through doors and windows.
I think you might find a great level of benefit from utilizing one of our Sound Sealing packages, if interested please check out the following link http://www.zerointernational.com/content.aspx?p=15
