Aloha Aaron,

Merry Christmas!

The new toys are looking good! Looking forward to hearing about how they sound in the room.

Aloha 8)

Yeah, me too...

The problem I'm going to run into shortly, is I keep getting all this equipment, and now it's going to get in the way of finishing out the control room. But, that's a good problem to have. 8)

I now need to figure out how I'm going to finish out the control room. Especially the back wall treatment. I've had ideas in my head for a couple years now. But I also realized last week after the console moved in, I need to make any treatment on the back wall an assembly than can be pulled down/disassembled realatively easy, for when I decide to change out consoles again in the future.

I've been trying to get the creative ideas into motion. I'm sure I'll figure out something.

Oops...forgot to post the pix of the work I did last Saturday. I ran out of insulation, so I wasn't able to finish the wall, but I just picked up some more yesterday. So I guess I'll finish it off this weekend...

Where the furring strips are, I now have drywall on that (you can see the back side of it in one photo). That's already reduced some direct sound going up the stairs...

Well, today consisted of mostly toy tinkering. (The 2")

However, I did go out and purchase the wire for the studio today. $1300 worth later...

Bought 100' of 24pr
60' of 16pr
50' of 12pr
and 300' of mic wire.

Since the HVAC didn't get installed by the end of the year, I needed that last minute tax write off. So there it is. Ouch!

But, I'll be having to pull it very soon in the coming weeks, so now I just need panels and connectors. 8)

That's it for the moment. If I don't update by the end of the year...HAPPY NEW YEARS EVERYONE!!!

Aaron

I plan on having a huge Grand Opening Party when this studio is done. I've got people coming from all over, so you'll be welcome to come.

I'm shooting for 3rd quarter 2007 at the latest. Although I may have a few sessions before that, working out the bugs, testing all the connections, etc.

Sooo, Aaron - what kind of "issues" with the 2" machine? Head wear not as claimed, motor bearings bad, or what? Steve

All sorts of quirks...

A repro card not working. some problems w/ about 6 bias cards, the MRL tape needs to be baked, had some tension problems, but I think I resolved them for now. All that fun stuff...

IF you really wanna know what your tension is doing dynamically, see if you can find one of these to rent

http://www.tentel.com/prod01a.htm

I have one from my video tech days that I'd be glad to loan you, but it only goes up to 1" tape (didn't do enough work on 2" machines to warrant the cost) -

Cool thing about these - you can watch the tension needle as the machine is actually running tape at correct speed, and any "twitches" you see can be compared to the once-around timing of each idler, capstan, take-up or supply reel, etc, so it's invaluable in finding bad bearings or dragging mechanical brake bands, etc... Steve

Ouch! Expensive buggers...

I've got the best MCI tech right here in Nashville, so I'm not going to worry about it too much. I'll let him go through the machine and fix 'er up.

Yeah, mine wasn't cheap even in 1977. Sure will tell you if your deck's mechanically 100% in a hurry tho.

Glad you got a guru already, big shock you could find one in Nashville, of all places     Steve

OK, here's a few more pix of what I got done over the weekend. I think I forgot to take a pic of the finished layer though...
