I need to sepparate my garage from the studio...

I suppose steel is the norm, but I'm curious as to what else is out there. Ideally, I want to use the garage portion as a 2nd tracking room so any sort of fire rated french/sliding glass would be ideal.

anyone know of anything that's remotely affordable?

This is one of the questions I also have that I have not yet asked... So I'm tuned to this tread as well.

Thanks for asking. Hopefully we'll have some info from these fine folks soon.

Fire-rated doors are typically solid, some w/ a small window, but not full glass like a french or sliding door. They aren't always steel, wood is used too, but with a gypsum (fire resistant) core. Most fire doors have to be self-closing also, to help prevent fire spread.

Find out what rating you need from your local building department, and a reputable door supplier can tell you about the doors that will meet local fire code.

Sorry - Fire rated = expensive. Sound proof = expensive. Fire rated + soundproof = expensive ^2 - so your stipulation of "remotely affordable" kind of skewed the equation...

For one thing, to be officially fire rated the specific door/frame must be TESTED, which raises the price - so this rules out any DIY stuff, even though a thoughtful person could build something that would work really well; the problem is PROVING it, without burning down the house (copyright David Byrne) -

Probably your best bet would be if you can find a supplier of fire rated doors, and examine all to see which would be better for sound. You can always add Zero seals to an otherwise good door, I don't think that would defeat any fire ratings... Steve
