I hope to have a little fun with this thread. :) I've spent over 6 years building my studio and I'm almost done. I've recently started getting into youtube.com with posting videos of my bands, so I've decided to put together small segments of me and my friends building my studio. I plan on going back to the beginning and putting together "best of" moments. I hope to balance showing the studio being built so you can all follow the progress, and also show how we all grew as people during the process. I think this will be a fun project.

UPDATE: So I've sucessfully put together 8 episodes now, all available by the links below. Only a couple episodes to go!

Part 1.

PS - You can laugh at us if you'd like, we're morons. :)

Now, I have to say THAT is original...

That will make a great studio build "diary" in VIDEO.

What would be nice is if you were to include specific details on HOW you built an item or how you did some construction. For most of us out here pics are great, but a "how-to" video is even BETTER! I never thought about doing a video myself, but I "may" consider it based on your initial idea.

Keep it up Sonic...I'm looking forward to viewing your progress and videos!

8) idea man...!!

Well I posted a couple months back, either here or at homerecording.com about the idea of putting together semi-instructional videos on how to build a studio. The reaction from everyone who read about my idea was very favorable. The idea hasn't been lost as you can see, I've just been busy trying to actually FINISH the studio. :) Which I'm sure most everyone would agree is the most important issue here.

The reason they'll only be "semi" instructional is because we did some things wrong along the way. But as I stated a couple months ago, it'll double as a cautionary tale. If you see how NOT to do it, and I cut to a brief scene of me explaining how to do it correctly, I think people could really learn from that. Plus I think my friends and I are very "interesting"... uh... "individuals". Bottom line is, we're weird. We kind of scare people away. When we get together we're the strangest group of people I know. So, I think it'll be somewhat fun for you guys to see that. It's like a car crash, you can't help but look. haha.

Also, if I put together small segments, the project won't be so huge I'd lose interest like if I were to try putting together one 2 hour video. This I can do in baby steps.

I put together part 1 of The Making of Sonic Clang's Studio and it's now up on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12pWJ14s5S0

Part 1 shows the first couple months of construction. There's lots of visible progress in this video. Enjoy. :)

Very Cool 8)

I wish I had video of mine, but pix will do. I think I'm working on the 5 or 6 year plan myself. I'm now 3 years into it.

Looking forward to part 2... :D

Part 2 is almost finished :) I'd say it should be up within a few days or so. We get really nutty in part 2.

Ha Haaaaaaaa! Man, that's pretty cool! I enjoyed watching that!

Got 1 question...ya'll intend to do any screwing of your drywall or sctrictly nailing?

Thanx!

Just watched part 1; did you really frame parts of your ceiling so the only thing holding it up is vertical nails? If so, has it fallen on your head yet?

Other than that, and too many stringers, I liked it; good sense of humor without overdoing, and tasteful... Steve

I did see a "caption" on that overhead framing about their having redone it later.

Me too; just not sure which pix were the later ones, and if that particular weakness was fixed... Steve

They were probably the earlier pics -- hence the "We had to redo this part" disclaimer. Mr. Clang, can you confirm/comment?

We redid the framing under the ducts for two reasons. 1) There was no reason for the 45 degree angles on the sides. It would have made attaching the ceiling absolute hell. and 2) the strucural reasons knightfly mentioned.

We stopped using nails all together a couple months in. The only nails I've used since the beginning of construction was on the frame I built around the pole in the middle of the live room, which insn't structural, and I ended up using screws on it anyway because when I was hammering on the thing it kept moving.

Oh yeah, and we actually were screwing the drywall to the studs... as well as nailing. We really were clueless when we started. I put about 50 screws and 50 nails per square foot. :) haha.

I put a pretty heavy disclaimer at the beginning of part 2 you'll all see. :) These are meant to be enjoyed more for entertainment purposes than for a "how-to" on building your own studio. Most of the explanations of things we did on camera during the building process were completely wrong, hence why I'm leaving most of that garbage out. Even with the disclaimer of "these are for fun", that doesn't mean I want to throw out misinformation.
