Hello All,

I am in the wiring stage of my new project studio and I was just looking for a quick bit of advice. I am look at 3 rooms... 1 dead room for recording vocals/guitars this room is 6 x 12, 1 drum/live room 12/10.5, 1 iso closet 6x6

I am using a 24 channel board and I wanted to set up XLR plates in each room to patch in sound to my control room.

In the dead room I was going to put 6 xlr connections with 4 1/4" returns.

In the live room I am looking at 15 xlrs with 4 1/4" returns

In the iso closet, 3 xlrs with 2 1/4" returns...

I wanted to do all these plates on standard 19" rack panels and build a box to house it in each room.. Is any of this overkill that you can see off the bat? Do you think that 6 XLR's in a vocal/guitar booth is too much or 15 in the drum room too few? I will mostly be recording small rock bands 3-4 piece, but I want to make it as flexible as possible. This is where I just wanted a few words of advice from seasoned professionals. I am upgrading from a 1 room project studio to a full tracking studio so this is my first attempt at something this large.

Also do you have any advice on where to pick up the XLR connectors and what series I should go for? I am looking at the Neutrik DL series.. they seem to be the most common and cost effective.

Any advice on my routing would be appreciated.

Not a bad plan. It really comes down to how much you can afford, because you can't have too many of them things, ever.

Don't necessarily limit yourself to the 24 inputs. You could bring 32 or so to a patch panel first, then patch what you need into the mixer. Obvious downside is yet even more connectors to buy, but it is much more versatile that way. But you may never need that much versatility.

I agree. Too many, always better than not enough. The connectors will depend on what the punch outs are on the panels.

Thanks Guys! I think I am going to run 32 channels.

I will do wall jacks for the 2 booths and run a 16 channel snake into the drum room.. That should be enough.
